Pocket-Sized Series: Mbira Renaissance Band - Live!
Bookstore note: We are so pleased to host Picket Sized Series, a collection of semi-unplugged, Tiny Desk-esque concerts organized by local musicians and artists. Please note that as part of this project, shows will be recorded, and audience members may be filmed during the event.
Over the next 6 months, the Pocket-Sized Series will feature performances by some of Edmonton's exceptional musicians, first presented live in the beautiful space at Paper Birch Books, and then online, with a fully mixed and edited video of the evening's special musical moments. As with NPR's "Tiny Desk" concerts, we'll feature these artists in a raw, intimate setting, highlighting their exceptional talent. Kicking off our series is the Mbira Renaissance Band, coming off the release of their newest album, "Roto".

About the band: Fusing the traditional mbira instrument of the Shona people of Zimbabwe with guitars, keyboard, and brass instruments, the Mbira Renaissance Band offers a fresh, energetic yet delicately balanced sonic experience. Cyclical and improvisational, the band serves a unique sound with splashes of reggae, afro-jazz, chimurenga and afro-pop. Based in Edmonton, the band has been twice nominated for the Edmonton Music Awards and has played across Canada, in Zimbabwe and the United States of America.
